A water fountain is one of the easiest ways to help a cat (or dog) drink more. But with so many options, it can be hard to know which one to pick. Here's what actually matters.
1. Material: stainless steel or plastic?
- Stainless steel is the easiest to keep clean, doesn't hold odours and is dishwasher-friendly on many models. It's a great choice for cats with sensitive chins.
- Plastic fountains are lighter and often cheaper, but they can scratch over time, so they need regular, gentle cleaning.
2. Corded or wireless?
- Corded (USB-powered) fountains run all day without charging – ideal near a wall outlet.
- Wireless (battery) fountains can go anywhere your pet likes to drink, with no cord to chew. Many use a motion sensor so the water only flows when your pet comes close, saving battery.
3. What size do you need?
- About 2 L: one cat or a small dog.
- About 3 L: two cats, or a cat and a small dog.
- About 4 L: multi-pet homes or medium dogs – fewer refills.
Whatever the size, rinse and refill every few days and give it a full clean about once a week.
4. Noise level
If the fountain will sit in a bedroom or quiet room, look for a low-noise pump (under about 20 dB is very quiet).
5. Filters
Filters catch hair and debris and help keep water fresh. Plan to replace them as recommended – usually every 2–4 weeks – so a bundle with spare filters can save money.
