A pet water fountain only works well when it's clean. Fresh, moving water encourages cats to drink, but a slimy bowl or clogged pump will put them off fast. The good news: keeping a fountain clean takes just a few minutes a week.
How often should you clean a cat water fountain?
- Every 2 to 3 days: top up or replace the water and check for hair and food bits.
- Once a week: empty the fountain, wash the bowl and lid, and rinse the filter.
- Every 2 weeks: take the pump apart and clean it.
- Every 2 to 4 weeks: replace the filter (sooner in multi-pet homes or if your water is hard).
Always follow the instructions that came with your fountain if they differ.
What you'll need
- Mild, unscented dish soap
- A soft sponge and a small bottle brush or old toothbrush
- White vinegar (for limescale)
- A replacement filter, if it's time
Step-by-step cleaning
- Unplug it first. Switch off or unplug the fountain before touching the pump. For wireless models, remove or switch off the battery unit.
- Empty and take it apart. Pour out the old water and remove the top, filter and pump.
- Wash the bowl. Use warm water and a little dish soap. Scrub corners where pink or brown slime (biofilm) builds up. Stainless steel bowls are easier to keep clean than plastic, and many are dishwasher safe.
- Clean the pump. Open the pump cover and remove the small impeller. Brush away hair and slime, then rinse. A clean pump runs quieter and lasts longer.
- Rinse or replace the filter. Rinse under clean running water only, with no soap. Replace it if it looks discoloured or the water flow has slowed.
- Remove limescale. If you see white crusty deposits, soak the parts in a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse very well.
- Rinse everything thoroughly. Make sure no soap or vinegar smell is left, because cats will refuse water that smells unusual.
- Reassemble and refill. Fill to the max line with fresh water and plug it back in.
Common problems and fixes
- Fountain is noisy: usually low water or hair in the pump. Top up and clean the impeller.
- Weak flow: clogged filter or pump. Clean the pump and replace the filter.
- Cat stopped drinking from it: check for soap smell, slime or a dirty filter. Cats are very sensitive to taste and smell.
- Pink slime keeps coming back: clean weekly and dry the bowl fully before refilling.
Never let the pump run dry
Running a pump without water can damage it. Check the level daily, especially in hot weather or homes with more than one pet. Larger fountains, like our 4L stainless steel pet water fountain, need refilling less often.
Choosing an easy-to-clean fountain
Stainless steel bowls resist scratches where bacteria can hide, and simple designs with few parts are faster to clean. See our quiet 3L stainless steel fountain, the wireless 2.5L fountain, or browse all pet water fountains.
